Review
While driving to Poas Volcano, we were blocked by the police. My spanish is too bad, but I understood that we cannot go there. So we decided to drive to La Paz Waterfall Gardens. It is about 15-20 minutes to drive from Poas volcano. Luckily no roads were blocked :)

At La Paz you can walk around some trails to view the huge waterfalls. They have some kind of wildlife-zoo garden here. There is a huge butterfly farm, several bird-farms and many animals more.
Inside the tucan-cage you can get in touch with these beautiful birds. Normally you would not see these birds so near on the ground. Mostly they are up in the trees. But here you can even get a tucan on you arm or hand. The keeper will guide him with some melon and the will quickly jump on your arm for a picture.

The whole place is a huge wonderfull garden with insolated animals living in huge farms. :) There are more areas with small colored frogs and a typicall Costa Rican house. You can walk around this place for a few hours or the whole day.
They have some awesome looking hotel rooms, but we already had our rooms booked in Country Inn & Suites. You can see some pictures of these rooms on their homepage.

How to get to La Paz Waterfall Gardens

You can drive from Alajuela to La Paz in 45-60 minutes. But keep in mind, that driving routes might take longer in Costa Rica. It is a beautiful road up and down the hills until you reach La Paz. The exact address is:
La Paz Waterfall Gardens, 126, Costa Rica

Good to know

La Paz (Spanish: "the peace") is a waterfall in central Costa Rica. In Spanish, it is known as Catarata de La Paz. It is 31 kilometres (19 mi) north of Alajuela, between Vara Blanca and Cinchona. The waterfall is located immediately alongside the road from Alajuela that leads to the northern plains of Costa Rica. The River La Paz forms the waterfall after traversing 8 kilometres (5 mi) of volcanic terrain, and then continues through the rainforest of the eastern side of Poás Volcano. A short path leads behind the waterfall, where a small shrine had been located. Upstream from the waterfall is La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a hotel and park, where visitors can observe many different species of local wildlife. (read more on wikipedia)
